IDS GeoRadar Successfully Participated to the NeTTUN Project
Ground Penetrating Radars provider contributed to the development of TULIPS, a revolutionary ground prediction system for soft soil Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs)
IDS GeoRadar has recently concluded its contribution to the NeTTUN project. The research, co-founded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework, has addressed the construction, management and maintenance of tunnels by providing groundbreaking solutions.
In this exciting framework, IDS GeoRadar worked with other partners in developing TULIPS, a revolutionary ground prediction system for soft soil Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) with the aim to identify large obstacles (cavities, boulders, foundations, etc.) and ground changes ahead of the excavation front.
Main research efforts were paid to the design and development of multi-frequency Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) antennas to be mounted on the TBM’s metallic cutting disk and capable of providing excellent data quality. Coupled with specific image processing algorithms, the TULIPS ground prediction system is able to provide a complete coverage of the excavation front surface.
The Data Fusion module takes input from the GPR and seismic subsystems and, through tracking of features from ring to ring, is able to produce the most probable interpretation of the geotechnical events ahead.
